2014 · biographical LGBTQ+ social documentary · feature documentary development project
Sofke’s World is a feature documentary development project tracing Sofija Cikron’s life, relationships, and social position through Berlin-centered fieldwork and author-led cinematic experimentation.
Dugometražni dokumentarac u razvoju o Sofiji Cikron - queer život, migracija i klasa viđeni kroz Berlin.
Sofke's Welt is one of those projects that lived entirely in development. We built a real package around Sofija - treatment, directorial vision, a Doc-Station statement, a full financing plan - and we took it where such films are supposed to travel: HAVC for script development, Berlin for the fieldwork, East Doc Forum in Prague. HAVC backed the script-development phase, and we closed that report honestly at 35,100 kn against actual invoices.
What I will not pretend is that it got made. The production financing never closed, the co-production never locked, and at some point I reworked the core idea into a shorter piece, Conchita und ich, rather than let the whole thing die. I still think the subject deserved the feature. What this file honestly proves is the unglamorous part of my work - turning a fragile personal story into a fundable, co-producible package that international partners can actually read.
- Matija Radeljak
Sofke's Welt was a feature documentary that Aning Film developed across 2014 and 2015 around Sofija Cikron - her life, her relationships, and her place in a city that both hides and exposes people like her. Shot in and around Berlin, it set out to make a personal portrait carry a wider argument about migration, class, and queer survival in urban Europe. Marijana Verhoef wrote and directed; Jelena Petkovic was attached as cinematographer; Matija Radeljak produced.
Most of the real work here is development work, and it was done properly. By the summer of 2014 the treatment, synopsis, and directorial vision were consolidated into a coherent author package for HAVC script development. In September the team filed author materials for the Berlinale Doc-Station. The project was positioned for international co-production from the start, including an intended partnership with the Center for Intercultural Practice in Belgrade, and it was carried out into the market - Berlin travel through the autumn of 2014, then East Doc Forum in Prague in March 2015.
The money was planned, not improvised. A financing plan dated 6 November 2014 mapped a full 105,080.94 EUR structure with named funding lines and cost categories. HAVC awarded the script-development line (4,463.82 EUR) while the larger production-support figure stayed an application rather than a signed decision. A development report closed on 2 February 2015 accounted for 35,100 kn of screenplay-phase spending - modest, real, and documented against invoices, which is more than most development files can say.
It did not become a finished film. The co-production never locked, the production-finance was never closed, and the archive shows a late-development project rather than a delivery. What it does show is a working method: the same biography turned into a treatment, a directorial vision, a Doc-Station statement, a financing plan, and a forum pitch - each a different reader, the same core. When the feature stalled, the idea was reworked into a short-documentary proposal, Conchita und ich, in 2015, which is adaptation rather than abandonment. As a portfolio entry, Sofke's Welt is proof of the development and co-production-packaging service: taking one fragile, personal subject and building the paperwork, financing architecture, and international positioning that a feature would need to exist.
